This white paper summarizes finds from OGCI Satellite Monitoring Campaign in 2021in Iraq. The campaign aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of satellite technology in detecting and quantifying methane emissions while providing local operators with valuable data to support mitigation efforts. In the initial phase, GHGSat conducted over 175 high-resolution observations over six selected sites in Iraq during a nine-month period, using both proprietary and publicly available satellite data. Sites were chosen based on factors such as existing methane plume evidence, flaring volumes, infrastructure age, field size, and production levels. The campaign highlighted both challenges and opportunities in leveraging satellite data for methane mitigation. It underscored the potential of combining satellite observations with targeted engagement strategies to enhance industry-wide efforts in reducing emissions.
